In recent months some new strategic challenges have emerged in the Asian region which have the potential for a negative impact on Australia’s interests.
The most serious of these challenges is the progress that North Korea is making towards becoming a nuclear power, and the rather dramatic actions that the leader, Kim Jong-un, has taken to reinforce his own hold on power.
Other sources of potential threats to regional security include the territorial disputes over the South China Sea and the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.
