Thousands of houses will be built on former defence land in Melbourne.
Treasurer Scott Morrison said that 6,000 homes could be built on the 128 hectare property.
“The Commonwealth land bank is open, and it’s open for business and it starts right here, on this tremendous site” Treasurer Scott Morrison said.
“There’ll be affordable housing on this site, there’ll be social housing on this site, there’ll be housing for key workers, there’ll be housing for private buyers, private renters, first home buyers, all of that.”
Though Labor is not opposed to the development, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says more funding and planning is needed, including decontaminating the land before any houses are built.
The state Labor government says the federal government has already told them it does not want to work with Victoria and will privately develop the Maribyrnong site themselves, Mr Shorten said.
“The federal government … has decided to bypass the state government and relevant planning authorities and they’re just going to do a big privatisation of this land for the highest dollar” he said.
“If you plonk 6000 houses, or about 15,000 people, in the middle of existing suburbs – you guarantee gridlock.”
